Valve Body : Found in automatic and cvt transmissions, a valve body is like a mechanical brain checking pressures and making decisions to help shift the transmission gears. When looking at a valve body, you will see a big piece of metal with lots of springs, valves, plugs, plates, check balls and solenoids in or on it. It contains numerous passages for transmission fluid to flow and is designed to help control the entire transmission and all of its moving parts.
Different parts of a valve body include valve bores, mating surfaces, and passages. The valve bore is machined specific to the springs and valves that travel within the bore. Mating surfaces are machined perfectly flat to keep fluid pressures contained. Passages help connect the multitude of pressures for the valves, clutches and accumulators that work together to move the automobile automatically.
Valve body problems can be difficult to spot. Sometimes the transmission will not shift correctly, other times you may just have an overdrive problem. Valve bodies can usually be rebuilt however some styles are designed to be replaced while replacement may just be necessary in other cases for other types of valve body problems.
