Used Engines : Used engines are usually the most inexpensive way to replace a faulty engine. The best used engines will come directly out of vehicles that have low mileage and were in an accident. Quality used engines are tested prior to being removed from the wrecked vehicle. Testing may include running the engine, compression testing and or leak down testing. After the engines are pulled, they are cleaned up and heat tabs are typically installed to monitor the engine whether or not it has overheated after installation. Warranties on used engines will void if they are overheated, abused, neglected, run our of oil or specific directions that come with the engine were not followed.
Most used engines will also have manifolds, oil pan, valve cover(s) and timing cover(s), however, these items as well as gaskets and seals are not guaranteed. The auto technician uses the best discretion on whether or not to reseal or transfer any of the engine parts, sensors or brackets. There should be no shortcuts when installing a used engine, repair or replace necessary items so that your engine will have the best chance or success.
When a used engine is installed, the cause of the previous engine must be kept in mind. If the previous engine failed due to a faulty part such as a bad radiator, the problem must be solved otherwise, the next engine will follow in the same pattern and fail. After the installation has occurred, a test run of the vehicle followed by a visual inspection should be performed to help make sure the installation was a success.
