Turbocharger : A turbocharger increases horsepower by using a turbine to force extra air into the combustion chamber. The intake air pressure created is called boost. By using the exhaust pressure to rotating the turbine, it forces the air into the combustion chamber thus increasing the horsepower. A wastegate is used to release the exhaust pressure to prevent the turbocharger from spinning too fast and blowing up the turbo.
Turbochargers use oil pressure to lubricate it. Most turbochargers are water cooled, but there are a few that are air cooled. Whenever a turbocharger fails, the vehicle may have low power, burn excessive oil or make high pitched strange sounds.
