Transponder : The transponder on an automobile uses a transponder chip in the key and a transponder receiver. They are used by the immobilizer system to initiate starting or not starting the engine. Introduction of the transponder key has reduced vehicle theft quite considerably. The transponder chip emits a small identification signal that is picked up by the transponder receiver. The signal verifies the code for the immobilizer and is checked by a verification process. In a split second the immobilizer makes a decision on whether the code is valid or not.
Problems with the transponder system may include a key lamp, security lamp, theft lamp or led, starting and immediately shutting off of the engine or a warning key message. These systems can be tricky to diagnose and usually require dealer type of equipment.
