Transmission Filter : This filter is made to clean the transmission fluid by removing debris and metal from the transmission fluid. A transmission filter is made of a very fine screen, a paper filter element, or other special filter materials. The transmission pump creates suction in the lower transmission area. The suction pulls the transmission fluid through the transmission fluid prior to the fluid going into any transmission parts. The lower transmission also is an area where fragments of clutches, brass and other metals can accumulate as normal transmission wear and tear occurs. The transmission filter keeps these materials from circulating through the vital transmission parts and the valve body.
Transmission filters are usually located in the bottom of the transmission. Removal of the transmission pan is necessary to change these style of filters. Some transmission models have transmission filters located inside the unit creating an unchangeable transmission filter without complete removal and disassembly of the transmission. Other transmissions have external screw-on transmission filters.
Preventive maintenance requires replacement of the transmission filters by manufacturers recommendations. Usually, transmission filters that require service are replaced every 30,000, 50,000 or 60,000 miles.
