TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER
Timing Chain Tensioner : A timing chain tensioner is the part of the timing chain system that helps keep the slack out of the chain. A timing chain stretches over time therefore requiring a tensioner to help keep the chain from slapping or jumping. There are different styles of timing chain tensioners. Some use a spring design while others use oil pressure to hydraulically press on the chain. Most tensioners also use a locking mechanism to compensate for the wear of the chain caused by stretching over time.
When you have a problem with the timing chain tensioner, it can lead up to a catastrophic engine problem. Most people will hear some kind of engine noises related to the timing chain when there is a problem. Oil pressure problems also can affect the tensioner causing low tension on the timing chain. When the problems are there, the chain will have too much slack. This slack can cause the timing chain to jump teeth, break or rub on the timing cover. All of the above problems are bad and can eventually cause the entire engine to fail.
Catching a timing chain tensioner problem early can help keep your engine happy. Bring in the car anytime you hear engine noises or feel that something does not sound or feel quite right. Most of the time, early detection will save you money on the repairs. Some cases may require a timing chain type job while other cases may require an oil pressure related solution to fix the problem.
