Points : Points and condenser use a contact breaker operated by an engine-driven cam. The position of the points contact breaker is set so that they open at the exactly correct moment needed to create the ignition spark when the engine piston is on the top of the compression stroke. The points contact breaker is usually mounted on a rotatable plate that is relative to the camshaft operating it. The plate can be rotated by a centrifugal mechanism or mechanically with vacuum thus advancing the ignition timing. This advance is used to optimize performance at higher revolutions. The condenser is used to help hold current to charge up the coil after each spark.
Points were used on engines until the late 70’s. Most points are converted to an electronic ignition system. Electronic ignition performs the same functions but electronically not mechanically.
Points need to be set up using a feeler gauge to get the correct gap and a dwell meter to set the exact timing of the spark. This is usually performed when a tune-up is needed.
