Piston : Inside the gas engine, a piston goes up and down in each cylinder. The piston goes down creating a vacuum to suck in fuel and air. The piston goes up compressing the fuel and air. The ignition system then explodes the mixture sending the piston down on a power stroke. The piston goes back up the final time forcing out exhaust gasses. A Diesel engine piston works virtually the same without an ignition system. It uses the piston to squeeze the diesel air mixture tight enough to cause it to explode.
A piston is made of forged metal strong enough to hold back the explosions of the fuel. Pistons are sealed to the cylinder using the piston rings. Most pistons outlast the engine, however piston problems can occur. Any piston problem requires an engine rebuild to repair the problem.
If you need a piston, you have options. A new engine, used engine, rebuilt engine or rebuilding of your engine are all answers to resolve the problem.
