Pickup Coil : A special winding within a distributor that serves the function of picking up the position of the camshaft to help trigger the ignition system’s spark. Pickup coil signals are used by computers, coils and or ignition modules. Some distributors may contain multiple pickup coils to help determine more precise signals needed for the fuel injection to operate properly.
Symptoms of a bad pickup coil may include:
- No start
- Check engine light on
- Engine light flashing while running
- Engine misfires
- Poor performance
Getting the pickup coil replaced may require rebuilding a distributor, replacing the distributor or just bolting on inside the distributor. Diagnostics and special testing procedures can pinpoint a pickup coil problem accurately.
