Passlock Sensor : A sensor built into an ignition lock cylinder that measures whether or not an ignition lock is valid or tampered with. The passlock sensor is used on GM based vehicles. It can help determine if an ignition lock is being picked or purposely broken to try and start a vehicle. If it goes into a tamper state, the computer of the engine will prevent the start of the vehicle.
A passlock sensor has a purpose of preventing car theft by disabling the car. Sometimes, the sensor will malfunction causing the car not to start at the wrong time. Below are signs that a passlock sensor may have inadvertently failed:
- Security light flashing or stays on
- No starting
- Engine starts for a couple of seconds then shuts off
- Theft light on or flashing
- Key not turning in the ignition
When replacing a passlock sensor, computer reprogramming is also required to setup the values of the new sensor. Not all auto repair shops can perform the task of replacing the passlock sensor since the computer reprogramming is required and you must have proper equipment to perform the task
