Oil Separator : An oil separator on an automotive application is designed to help vent the crankcase. A breather hose that is hooked up to vacuum from the intake manifold to the crankcase requires either a pcv valve or an oil separator to vent the engine without allowing the oil to be sucked into the intake.
There are several different ways in which these oil separators work. One of the most common kind uses a mesh filter. The oil droplets get trapped inside the mesh while the air can still pass through it. A more effective oil separator is made up of microfibers, which is designed to trap tiny particles of oil.
When an oil separator fails, engine seals can blow out due to excessive pressure. More often than this, oil can get slurped up by the engine causing an excessive oil burning problem for no reason.
