Map Sensor : A MAP sensor (Manifold absolute pressure sensor) is used by the engine computer as a sensor to measure the air pressure inside the intake manifold. The input signal from the MAP sensor is used by the engine computer to calculate the air density so that the calculation of the fuel metering is more precise. Optimum combustion requires the correct amount of air. The MAP sensor helps measure the air.
MAP sensors may fail leaving you with unusual symptoms. The engine may use a lot of fuel, blow out black smoke, run sluggish or repeatedly stall. The sensor can be out of calibration or just not work altogether. Diagnostic computers can usually determine the MAP sensor problems. Other times, manual testing is required.
