Knock Sensor : A knock sensor is basically a microphone bolted solid to an engine block. Its function is to listen for a knock or ping type sound. The engine computer listens for this sound to help adjust the ignition timing. If the sound is there, the computer will retard the timing.
When a knock sensor is bad, a check engine lamp typically will illuminate. Symptoms include a sluggish performance or a slight loss of power. It takes computer diagnostics to determine the exact problem.
