Intake Manifold : Intake manifolds are used on the engine to house fuel injection or carburetion and or funnel air into the engine. It is important to have an intake manifold so that the air-flow can be manipulated to allow an engine to rev faster or slower when needed. The intake manifold is designed to allow the proper amounts of air to each cylinder. Intake manifolds are bolted directly to the cylinder head of piston engines or the intake part of the block of rotary engines. These manifolds are vital to all types of engines to help deliver the air and hold a throttle valve to regulate the engine speed.
Intake manifolds are made of plastic or aluminum in most cases. Intake manifolds generally do not fail but they can fail if they leak air. Plastic intake manifolds can warp, blow apart or crack. Metal intake manifolds hold up better however they can be damaged if the casting cracks. These manifolds can warp whenever the engine overheats requiring replacement.
Some intake manifolds contain various components that can cause a failure requiring a full replacement. Depending on the make and model, runner flaps, flap actuators, flap motors, coolant pipes and or electronic sensors can fail requiring a full replacement. Proper diagnostic tests must be performed to narrow down and isolate the problem prior to replacement. Intake manifold gasket replacement and or seal replacement are often problems with the intake manifold and these problems are usually corrected by simply removal and re-installation with new gaskets and seals.
