FUEL PUMP
Fuel Pump : This part is an electric pump or mechanical pump that transfers the fuel from the fuel tank to the fuel injectors or carburetor. Fuel pumps are on all gas powered vehicles and most other type of fuel driven automobiles. Fuel pumps are usually located inside the fuel tank. Some fuel pumps are under the vehicle and mechanical fuel pumps are located on the engine. Fuel pumps create the needed fuel pressure for the engine and the pressure and fuel volume are both required for the engine to function properly.
A common type of electric fuel pump is the fuel pump assembly. Fuel pump assemblies are required to be replaced on most modern cars. They are located inside the fuel tank keeping them submersed in liquid fuel. This is a safe place for them also since liquid fuel does not burn therefore minimizing a fire hazard from the electronics in the fuel pump motor. Most fuel pump assemblies will also come with the fuel level sensor that gives the fuel level signal to the instrument cluster.
Some vehicles have two electric fuel pumps. Having a supply fuel pump inside the fuel tank and a main fuel pump on the frame is a setup that some vehicles have. The supply fuel pump creates a low fuel pressure just to supply the main fuel pump. The main fuel pump then creates a high pressure fuel and delivers it to the engine.
Mechanical fuel pumps are on many older automobiles and also on many diesel models. This design bolts directly to the engine of the automobile and uses direct engine power to pump the fuel. Some vehicles may even use both an electric fuel pump with a mechanical fuel pump. The electric fuel pump transfers the fuel from the fuel tank to the mechanical fuel pump on the engine. Using the engine, fuel pressure can be created with a higher pressure output easily by harnessing the direct power of the engine.
All fuel pumps eventually will fail and need to be replaced. When a fuel pump fails, usually the vehicle will not start and run. A fuel pump can also restrict the engine by creating a low fuel pressure situation for the engine thus starving the engine for gas.
