Freeze Plugs : Steel, brass or aluminum plugs pressed strategically in cylinder heads and engine blocks designed to pop out if the cooling system freezes causing the coolant to expand. Coolant is always recommended as per auto manufacturer. All types of engine coolant require a percentage of water to be mixed with the coolant which changes the coolant cooling point and freezing point. Too much water in a cooling system in a below freezing environment can cause the freeze plugs to pop out to help reduce damage to the engine. Other freeze plug issues are caused by rust or corrosion. If a freeze plug is leaking due to corrosion, it must be replaced.
Some freeze plug repairs are easy while some may require engine disassembly or removal. Freeze plugs usually have to be visually seen to estimate to see what difficulty level they are to replace. Checkout Guy’s Automotive for all your freeze plug replacement needs.
