Damper : A hydraulic device that helps tension the timing belt. The damper is a hydraulic cylinder that compresses hydraulic oil to push against a tensioner pulley against the timing belt. A damper may need to be replaced during a timing belt replacement procedure. An auto mechanic can determine whether or not a damper should be replaced by inspecting the damper for hydraulic leakage or failure.
Not all cars, trucks, vans or suvs that have a timing belt use a damper. The automotive makes that do use one should be properly inspected my the mechanic while the timing belt is being replaced or any other repair that requires the timing belt to be removed and reinstalled.
